India’s Essar Group to Build “Largest Steel Plant in US History”: Trump
India’s Essar Group is set to invest $18 billion in the United States, including $15 billion for a major steel plant in Iowa, US President Donald Trump announced at an Oval Office event. The project, being developed by Essar’s US subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, is expected to become one of the largest steel manufacturing facilities in the country.
The facility is projected to begin production in 2030 and is expected to produce up to 10 million tonnes of steel annually once fully operational. Trump described the project as the “largest steel plant in American history” and said it would strengthen domestic manufacturing in the United States.
The announcement was made in the presence of members of the Ruia family, which owns the Essar Group. The company said the Iowa facility will form part of an integrated US steel supply chain, with iron ore sourced from its operations in Minnesota.
Essar’s $15 Billion Iowa Steel Plant
The proposed Essar steel plant in Iowa is expected to cover the entire steel production process within the United States. According to the White House, the project is intended to strengthen domestic production and reduce dependence on imported steel.
Once fully built, the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 10 million tonnes. Production is scheduled to begin in 2030, although the project will be developed in phases.
Trump linked the investment to his administration’s efforts to encourage domestic manufacturing. He pointed to the 50% tariffs on steel imports imposed by his administration last year, arguing that the measures have encouraged companies to build production facilities inside the US rather than pay import duties.
Trump said the American steel industry was “roaring back to life” and argued that companies were investing in US manufacturing because of the tariffs.
The announcement represents one of the largest planned overseas investments by an Indian industrial group in the United States and adds to the growing economic relationship between India and the US.
Project Gains Attention Ahead of US Midterm Elections
The announcement also carried political significance in Iowa, a state where Republicans are preparing for competitive midterm elections. Trump said he planned to campaign in the state in the coming weeks and indicated that he would appear at a rally alongside Republican candidates.
Representative Ashley Hinson, who is running for the US Senate, and Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who is seeking re-election, attended the Oval Office event. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Senator Joni Ernst were also present.
Trump highlighted the investment as evidence of renewed industrial activity in the United States. The project is expected to create economic activity in Iowa while supporting demand across sectors that depend on domestically produced steel.
Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia thanked the Trump administration for its focus on domestic manufacturing. He said the company supported the emphasis on building industrial capacity in the US.
Essar’s Global Steel and Energy Operations
The Essar Group was founded by brothers Shashi Ruia and Ravi Ruia in India in 1969. The conglomerate has interests across sectors including energy, mining, technology and retail.
In India, the group owns a large single-location steel facility in Hazira, Gujarat, as well as a major refinery at Vadinar. Essar has also expanded its operations internationally, including through its acquisition of the Stanlow refinery in the United Kingdom.
Its US subsidiary, Mesabi Metallics, is headquartered in Nashwauk, Minnesota. The company has operated in the region since 2007, when it acquired Minnesota Steel, and controls more than 1.4 billion tonnes of iron ore resources.
The Minnesota operations are expected to play an important role in supplying raw materials to the proposed Iowa steel facility, creating an integrated supply chain stretching from iron ore production to finished steel.
Mesabi Metallics CEO Joe Broking described the project as a major development for US-made steel. He said domestically produced steel would support industries including national defence, automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding, household appliances, energy and infrastructure.
The planned $15 billion Essar steel plant in Iowa therefore represents a significant expansion of the Indian group’s presence in the US industrial sector. With production targeted for 2030 and a projected annual capacity of 10 million tonnes, the project is expected to become an important part of the country’s future steel manufacturing landscape.
