Voices Within: The Mimicry Maestro Who’s Making India Laugh”
In a world of ever-evolving entertainment, where originality and replication often wrestle for attention, one man has managed to bring the two together in perfect harmony — Sandeep Lokhande, a name now synonymous with powerful mimicry, unmatched voice control, and clean, impactful performances.
His journey began at the tender age of 8 in a humble Maharashtrian household, when he mimicked iconic actor Dada Kondke for the very first time. “People around me couldn’t believe it,” Sandeep recalls with a smile. “They laughed, they clapped, and that’s when I felt the joy of being able to bring happiness through voice.” That one spontaneous act would mark the start of a lifelong passion — a passion that turned into purpose.
Over the years, what started as childhood fun evolved into a disciplined craft. Sandeep believes mimicry is not just a skill — it’s a form of ‘sadhana’. “You don’t just mimic a voice. You observe, internalize, and respect the artist you’re imitating. The style, the vocal tone, the pauses, the body language — it all matters. It’s a divine gift, but also a responsibility,” he says.
That deep respect for the art form is reflected in Sandeep’s work. He consciously avoids foul or abusive content, choosing instead to bring laughter with dignity. “The audience connects when they see the effort. When you come close to recreating a voice they love — with the right emotions and timing — the cheers and applause make it all worth it. It’s pure love,” he shares.
A gold medalist in mimicry from Mumbai University, and winner of multiple intercollegiate mimicry championships, Sandeep’s efforts were nationally recognized when he made it to the Top 3 nominations at the WOW Awards Asia 2019 — one of the most prestigious platforms for live performers in the continent.
Yet, despite the accolades, he remains grounded. “It’s our senior stage and film comedians, character artists, and film stars who’ve laid the path for us. We learn by watching them, by absorbing their style, and we give it back with our own flavor,” he says, acknowledging his inspirations.
In a time where mimicry often gets reduced to comic fillers, Sandeep Lokhande is redefining it — not just as entertainment, but as an art form worthy of reverence. His belief is beautifully summed up in a quote he holds close to his heart:
“Zindagi ki asli khubsurti ye nahi ki aap kitne khush hai, balki asli khubsurti ye hai… ki aapke zariye se dusre kitne khush hai.”
With over 64 voices in his repertoire and a heart that beats for performance, Sandeep doesn’t just imitate — he illuminates. And that is what makes his mimicry more than mimicry — it becomes magic.
