But there is another place where water quality deserves attention: our dogs’ grooming routines.

What exactly is hard water?
Hard water contains relatively high levels of dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium.
The degree of water hardness varies significantly between locations and even between individual water sources within the same city. For pet parents, that means the water coming from the bathroom tap can become another factor worth considering when thinking about a dog’s skin, coat and bathing routine.
This matters because shampoo doesn’t work in isolation. It interacts with the water being used to rinse and cleanse the coat.
Why water quality matters during a dog’s bath
Anyone who has lived with hard water may recognise some of its everyday effects: soap may not lather as expected, mineral deposits can accumulate on surfaces, and rinsing can sometimes feel different compared with softer water.
Similar considerations apply when bathing a dog.
Water hardness can influence how cleansing products perform during washing and rinsing. For dogs that are bathed regularly, particularly those with longer or denser coats, the overall grooming routine becomes especially important.
That doesn’t mean hard water automatically causes a skin or coat problem. A dog’s coat condition can be influenced by many factors, including grooming frequency, environment, nutrition, underlying health and the products being used.

Dogs in India live within a particular combination of environmental conditions.
Heat and humidity can influence grooming routines. Tick and flea concerns don’t necessarily fit neatly into a single season. Water quality differs across cities and households. Bathing frequency can also vary depending on a dog’s lifestyle, coat and environment.
Yet pet grooming products are often evaluated using much simpler criteria: fragrance, foam, packaging or a handful of ingredients highlighted on the front label.

Look beyond how much a shampoo foams
More foam does not necessarily mean better cleansing.
Instead, pet parents can look at the formulation more broadly: the cleansing system being used, whether the complete ingredient list is available, the intended use of the product and whether it is appropriate for their dog’s individual grooming needs.
Understanding ingredients becomes particularly useful here.
Rather than relying solely on front-of-pack claims, reading the ingredient list can help pet parents understand what they are actually using on their dogs.
